Project Notes
A processing project at Bowdoin College Library, begun on July 8, 1996,
and ending on December 31, 1998, provided for the arrangement and
description of the George J. Mitchell Papers. That undertaking
incorporated several technological applications that were new at the
time, including substantial reliance on Web publishing to produce an
electronic finding aid and to provide for digital copies of many of the
images and objects contained in the collection.
The first George J. Mitchell Papers website appeared in the fall of
1996, and that site evolved rapidly during the following year as new
features and expanded information were added.
Significant revisions to the George J. Mitchell Papers website in
January 2002, dictated in part by college-wide Web redesign and in part
by review of obsolete files, provided the opportunity to archive
portions from earlier versions of the website, particularly archaic
"home pages," project notes, and other details about the processing
project that may remain of historical interest but are otherwise
essentially obsolete.
