Office of Institutional Research: Reports, Surveys, and Publications, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
The Office of Institutional Research was established in 1992. In January 1995, Christine Brooks was appointed Director of Records and Research, overseeing both Institutional Research and Student Records. The office consolidates the self-study and comparative study functions previously performed by many other departments of the college.
Reports, surveys and publications produced by Institutional Research include statistical information on Bowdoin and its relationship to other colleges of its type in the United States as well as internal analyses done with information supplied by college departments. Also included are copies of reports on a number of topics submitted to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Service (IPEDS). Copies of all reports, publications and surveys are put on reserve in the library for one year after release. Records contained in this collection that were created prior to 1992 were created by staff in various college departments. These functions are now carried out by Institutional Research.
