Campus Center Planning Committee: Records, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
The Campus Center Planning Committee, formed in 1991, oversaw the design and construction of the new student union. By 1993, $4.7 million had been appropriated for the renovation of the indoor athletic facility, the Hyde Cage, into the David Saul Smith Union. The Committee consisted of several members of the Administration, Faculty and Staff, including: Mark Wethli (Chair), David Barbour, Blythe Edwards, and William Torrey. The Committee chose Malcolm Holzman of Hardy, Holzman, and Pfeiffer (New York) and Nancy Barba of Reed and Barba (Portland) as architects for the building. The Committee's mission was to create "a building that will redefine and enrich the spirit of our community in all of its aspects--social, academic, and intellectual--for many years to come." Special consideration was given to preserve some original design features of the "Cage." This included preserving the metal rafters, clerestory windows and wood from the original track which was used as siding in the pub. The purpose of the Smith Union was to abate overcrowding at the existing student union, the Moulton Union, and to provide a "magnet" center for many student activities and services. The Committee disbanded after the Smith Union was dedicated on March 3, 1995.
The collection documents the planning and construction of the David Saul Smith Union at Bowdoin College. Material includes subject files of Mark Wethli, the committee Chair, architectural plans and drawings of proposed and actual construction, and samples of materials, finishes and furnishings for the building. In addition, there is a series of minutes of meetings with the building contractors from the construction phase of the project.
This series contains subject files of the Smith Union planning committee, headed by Mark Wethli. The materials represent correspondence of Mr. Wethli with various agencies responsible for the design and construction of Smith Union. Publicity in all its stages is also included in the folders. Dates range from 1992 to 1995, most clustering around 1992-93. The most significant topics are the design ideas hand drafted by Mr. Wethli and other committee members, letters between the committee and design/construction services, and architectural sketches.
