Biographical/Historical Note

Barry Mills was inaugurated as the fourteenth president of Bowdoin College in October 2001. The fifth alumnus of the College to serve as president, he was graduated cum laude from Bowdoin in 1972, and was a member of the Bowdoin College Board of Trustees from 1994 until 2000.

During his administration, President Mills has worked to build the endowment, and resources for financial aid, while increasing enrollment. He has also strived to increase diversity among students, faculty, and staff. His tenure is noted for a number of major campus building projects, including the construction of Kanbar Hall for added classrooms, restoration of the Chapel towers, construction of new residence halls, renovation of the historic first-year brick dormitories, renovation of the Museum of Art, conversion of Curtis Pool to a recital hall, and construction of a new hockey rink, Watson Arena.

For more information on Barry Mills' presidency see Office of the President.

1.2.14.2: Museum of Art Renovation, 1999-2008, undated   1.2 linear feet.

Series Description:

In October 2004 the Bowdoin College Board of Trustees gave final approval to a renovation of the Walker Art Building, home to the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. After interviewing seven architectural firms, Machado and Silvetti Associates was chosen for the project. Responding to historic preservationists and concerned members of the College community and public, the firm modified their original design to retain the staircase leading from the campus quad to the Museum rotunda. The Museum was closed from July 2005 until October 2007 while construction was underway; reopening October 14, 2007. Included in this series are architectural proposals, presentations, and drawings, as well articles, newspaper clippings, notes, background material, and planning documents.

1.2.14.3: Watson Arena Planning and Design, 1985-2005, undated   1.0 linear foot.

Series Description:

A new hockey rink to replace Dayton Arena (built in 1956) was a campaign commitment of The Bowdoin Campaign. Though officially launched November 10, 2006, the campaign began its "quiet phase" on July 1, 2004. With the campaign underway, planning began for the new hockey rink. This series contains the hockey rink files of Scott Meiklejohn, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Assistant to the President. Included are architectural proposals, background material, presentations, drawings, estimates, meeting minutes, and notes. Bear Mountain Design Architects Collaborative, Ltd. was chosen as architect for the new arena; Pro Con, Inc. was the contractor. At the groundbreaking ceremony on June 2, 2007, President Mills announced that the arena would be named Watson Arena, in honor of Sid Watson, Ashmead White Director of Athletics. Construction began September 2007, and Watson Arena officially opened January 18, 2009.
